What Have You Done by Matthew Farrell
(Spoilers Ahead)
I grabbed What Have You Done as a Kindle First read awhile back. I finally got around to reading it and I was so glad I did! This book sucked me in right from the beginning. It opens with the story of a young Liam being tied up and almost drowned in a bathtub by his mentally disturbed mother as she was trying to get them all back together with his father (who you learn is deceased). Then suddenly Liam awakes from the dream, naked in a bathtub filled with water (something he is terrified of) and with no memory of what happened to the night before. Boom! Sucked in!
Present day, Liam is a forensic investigator for a police department and his brother Sean being a cop in the same department. Both survived their mother's attack and have grown up to be responsible adults... maybe.
Liam is called to the scene of a homicide after his disturbing morning and he arrives to find the woman he had a long affair with until very recently brutally murdered. He has no memory of the prior evening and he has a text from this woman from the night before.
As things progress, all signs point to Liam being guilty of murder, so much so that even HE starts questioning whether he could do it or not. His brother is helping him to hide evidence while at the same time hiding some evidence about himself.
I was constantly questioning who the guilty party was. Was it Liam? Sean? Liam's wife Vanessa? All of them raised a lot of suspicion. It kept you guessing.
By the end, you find out that Sean is a serial killer and has killed multiple women, shaving their head to resemble the way his mother looked when she tried to kill him and Liam when they were kids. Vanessa found out that Sean was doing that and convinced him to help her kill Kerri (Liam's former mistress) and frame Sean. So many bad guys (and girls)!
Sean ends up in prison and Vanessa ends up dead (suicide by cop). Liam probably ends up deranged himself. Oh and Sean kills Don - - they guys' long time friend and mentor (this broke my heart!).
Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
